What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art of maximizing the quality and quantity of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears as high as possible on the list of non-ad results returned by a search engine for any appropriate combination of search words. Let’s break that down a bit.

All the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com, Baidu, DuckDuckGo, etc.) use crawlers, which are programs running on servers that wander through the Web finding as much content as they can and then indexes it according to keywords like “good pasta recipe” or “how to remove your foot from an alligator’s mouth”. In order to properly index a web page, the search engine looks for clues – the words and sentences on the page, the titles of images or videos within the page, the links to that page from within the site or from outside of the site, etc.

Next, the search engine ranks the content according to all of the possible keywords so that when you search for “best mothers day presents” you get what the search engine thinks is the most relevant results first. This is known as the search engine result page (SERP). Where a particular result falls in this list is called it’s rank in the search, and our job is to increase your website’s search engine ranking for the keywords that are most appropriate to your content and the most likely to be used in a search. We want to increase:

  • Quality of traffic. You can attract all the visitors in the world, but if they’re coming to your site because Google tells them you sell Apple computers instead of apples, that is not quality traffic. You want to attract visitors who are genuinely interested in products that you offer.
  • Quantity of traffic. We want as many appropriate people from those search engine results pages (SERPs) to visit your website as possible. More traffic is better.

And we want these to be “organic” results. Ads make up a significant portion of many SERPs. Organic traffic is any traffic that you don’t have to pay for.

SEO is both a science and an art because the search engines don’t just tell you how to increase your ranking. If they did, unscrupulous website owners would use that information to make sure their website is at the top of the SERP even if it’s not a relevant result. So the search engines are constantly adjusting their algorithms to best show relevant results and, in that process, to penalize the ranking of sites that appear to be trying to game the system.

Search Engine Optimization

How do we increase SERP ranking?

The main ways to increase your website ranking on search engine result pages are:

  1. Optimizing your website by having unique, in-depth content, including words and phrases that describe the content well (embedding keywords), making the navigation as understandable to the search engine as possible, having the site “mobile friendly” so it looks good and is easy to navigate on a smartphone, making sure the website is quick to respond, having a search engine friendly site map, and having “fresh” content. Search engines like sites that are active, so adding and changing the content of your site often will increase it’s ranking.
  2. Increase your site’s popularity, relevance, trustworthiness, and authority on the greater web. This is done primarily by increasing the number of trusted, well-trafficked sites that link to your website, including social media sites such as Facebook and  Twitter as well as your appearance on other blogs (guest blogging) and any other ways your site or your product or service is mentioned. The more relevant links the search engine finds to your site and the more often people visit your site from these links, the more it assumes the information is seen as important.
